Oedipus Rex By Sophocles I (c. 496 - 406 B.C.) Essays -
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles I (c. 496 - 406 B.C.) Oedipus Rex by Sophocles I (c. 496 - 406 B.C.) Sort of Work: Disastrous, beautiful Greek show Setting Thebes, a city of antiquated Greece Chief Characters Oedipus, King of Thebes Jocasta, his mom ... lastly his spouse Teiresias, a visually impaired prophet Creon, Oedipus' brother by marriage A Chorus Play Overveiw [The unique fifth century B.C. Greek crowd was thought to be acquainted with the foundation of the play.] Laius and Jocasta were King and Queen of the Great City of Thebes. In any case, it had been forecasted that their child would grow up to murder Laius, his own dad, and afterward wed Jocasta, his own mom. Dreading the divination's satisfaction, Laius and Jocasta conveyed Oedipus, their newborn child, to a hireling, with orders that he be executed. The hireling drill the angel into the wild, yet, couldn't force himself to do the order. Rather, he turned the youngster over to a Corinthian herder, who thusly passed the little kid on to Polybus, King of Corinth - who received him as his own. Oedipus was along these lines raised to accept that he was the normal child of Polybus. Be that as it may, Oedipus' life started to unwind the day he caught a prophet rehash to him the incomprehensible prediction: he would some time or another kill his dad and wed his mom. Assuming that Polybus was his genuine dad, Oedipus resolved to leave Corinth so as not to remain anyplace close Polybus. In his movements, Oedipus went to a spot where three streets combined. There he got made up for lost time in a rough contention with a band of explorers. He figured out how to murder everything except one of his assailants, however stayed careless in regards to the sad incongruity of this triumph: among the men he had killed was Laius, his actual dad. Afterward, the cryptic predictions finished their dreadful and unexpected pattern of satisfy lm,nt when Oedipus embraced a crucial to spare Thebes, despite everything recognized as his local city, from the predations of a critical female beast, the Sphinx. Of all the unfortunate saints to make the endeavor, Oedipus alone had the option to answer the conundrum that was presented jokingly to all voyagers along the Theban side of the road by the winged lion-lady: What goes first on four legs, at that point on two, and afterward on three? The Sphynx had covetously eaten up each one of those bold and irresponsible spirits who entertained her with intriguing answers; however Oedipus, with the straightforward response Man, picked up the ability to final] devastate her. The appreciative people of the city immediately acclaimed him as King, and in time, he met, began to look all starry eyed at, furthermore, wedded his own mom, Jocasta. Obviously Jocasta had no clue about that her new youthful spouse was the child she had sent off to be executed as a newborn child; nor did Oedipus understand that the terrible prescience had now finally been satisfied. [As the play starts, the account of how Oedipus finds his violations unfolds.] In Thebes, a loathsome plague had struck. The residents collected to interest King Oedipus to control the infection, and Oedipus consoled them that Creon, Jocasta's sibling, had gone to Delphi to ask the incomparable Apollo how the plague may be finished. At the point when Creon at last returned, he brought alarming news: Apollo had pronounced that the scourge had happened upon the city on the grounds that the very man who had killed King Laius years before was presently an occupant of Thebes. Apollo further swore that the plague would persevere until the killer was uncovered and ousted from the city. Oedipus, completely uninformed that he himself was the person who had struck down Laius, pledged to find the character of the killer no matter what: ... Presently I rule, holding the force which he had held before me, having the similar spouse and marriage bed - and on the off chance that his seed had not met infertile fortune, we ought to be connected by posterity from one mother; yet as it might have been, destiny jumped upon his Head, [and I will search] to hold onto the hand which shed that blood. Oedipus' initial step was to bring in Teiresias, a visually impaired diviner of famous insight. At the point when the King addressed Teiresias with respect to the personality of Laius' killer, the prophet initially asserted that he knew the man's name, yet then dithered: I will never uncover ... I won't hurt you or me. Still Oedipus squeezed, and Teiresias at long last yielded. You are the slayer whom you look for, he tragically unveiled; And feared foot will drive you from this land. You who currently observe straight will at that point be visually impaired. Oedipus, incensed at the proposal of his blame, upbraided the prophet, who answered by demanding that Oedipus was however incognizant in regards to reality
Thomas Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Declaration of Independence Essay Example for Free
Thomas Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Declaration of Independence Essay Thomas Paineââ¬â¢s Common Sense and Thomas Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Declaration of Independence are two significant and well known powerful reports in American history. The two archives were written in 1776 about a similar subject (Famighetti 512; Independence Hall Association 1999). In any case, as one peruses the various archives one would watch the distinction in tone and styles received by each creator to communicate their thoughts. As influential works the two presents the present issues that they were confronting, both give reasons with respect to why the issue was happening and the two presents an answer for the issue. The subject of the two archives was Great Britainââ¬â¢s relationship with the American states. The two archives were composed when Great Britain was constraining the American states to pay absurd and out of line duties to her (Perry 431). Paine had felt that Great Britain was manhandling its capacity while Jefferson contended that Great Britain was a dictator. At that point each creator continued to specify their own reasons why they think it was so. Taking into account the present conditions, the two creators had felt that the settlements should liberate itself from Britainââ¬â¢s rule. In imparting his thoughts, Thomas Paineââ¬â¢s Common Sense was composed more toward an article enticing exposition that meant to cause the individuals to get mindful of what was truly going on among Britain and the American provinces. In the initial passage Paine plainly concede that what he was going to state may not be the general conviction or perspectives on his perusers, ââ¬Å" maybe the feelings contained in the accompanying pages are not yet adequately chic to acquire them general favorâ⬠( Independence Hall Association1999 ). He was simply introducing his conclusion with respect to a specific circumstance. Then again, Jeffersonââ¬â¢s works was at that point a source of inspiration as though the individuals definitely comprehended what was happening. The presumption that he was tending to individuals who definitely realized the genuine circumstance was in the announcement, ââ¬Å"When, over the span of human occasions, it gets fundamental for one individuals to break up the political groups which have associated them with anotherâ⬠(Fameghetti 512), as though suggesting that specific occasions of which the individuals knew about is presently driving them to isolate from Britain. As such, Common Sense was instructing the individuals while The Declaration of Independence was to a great extent inspiring the now ââ¬Å"educatedâ⬠individuals. Thomas Paineââ¬â¢s talk was only voicing his conclusions and educating the individuals regarding the genuine circumstance, his manner of speaking was a greater amount of quiet influence as though he was awakening the general American open from a long rest of lack of concern and numbness when he sees that the Americans were in ââ¬Å"a long propensity for not thinking a thing wrongâ⬠which ââ¬Å"gives it a shallow appearance of being rightâ⬠( Independence Hall Association 1999 ) . Paine at that point finished his report with a proposal of what the American individuals ought to do. Jefferson then again, embraced a progressively certain, decisive and with a desire to move quickly tone in his work, with the objective of revitalizing more supporters and adherents to the reason for freedom and encouraging them to make a prompt activity. This can be upheld by the way that when the report was imagined and perused, not all Americans consented to the detachment (Perry 431). However Jefferson utilized the ââ¬Å"We hold these certainties to act naturally evidentâ⬠, utilizing the word ââ¬Å"weâ⬠to imply that he was expecting that all Americans was sharing his perspectives and with this respect he was assuming the job as the voice of the American individuals (Fameghetti 512). In contrast to Paine, Jefferson finished the report not with a recommendation yet with an intense declaration for the need of partition (Fameghetti 513). Additionally, the association of the two archives was unique. Jefferson took a fairly immediate and unexpected methodology in imparting his perspectives. He promptly present his thoughts in the first place scarcely any sections refering to John Lockeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"inalienable rightsâ⬠as the fundamental reason for his contention and absent a lot of faltering bolstered his view on partition by posting Britainââ¬â¢s deficiencies. The subject of his works was more to legitimize American demonstrations of insubordination with the goal that different countries, for example, Spain and France from which they would like to pick up help for their motivation won't think about their progressive activities as illicit demonstrations of disobedience (Maier 43). Paine, then again, embraced a narrating group in introducing his perspectives. He went to considerable lengths in giving foundation data about his subject (Independence Hall Association 1999). He inspected everything about ideal models and introduced them as coherent clarifications on the side of his perspectives on why it is better for a country to be free of Britain. At the point when one inspects every report, one can infer that in Common Sense, Paine went about as a convincing teacher, whose job was just that of a man who had the errand of stimulating the enthusiasm of his perusers to agree with his perspectives while Jefferson acted more as a functioning chief of disobedience, whose primary objective was to rouse the individuals to make prompt activity because of their conviction that Great Britain ought not lead over them. How to write those pesky why this college essays
Ah, Christmas break A whole week to sleep late, hang out with your friends, and stuff yourself with leftovers. Unless, of course, youre a senior trying desperately to finish your college applications. Even if your main essay is done, you might still have a bunch of supplements waiting to be done. And if thats the case, then chances are some of those supplements include the perennial why this college? question. In some cases, you may not be able to answer entirely truthfully (I needed another safety school, my parents are making me apply), but even assuming that you actually want to attend most of the schools youre applying to, this question can be hard to get started on. If that describes your situation, this post is for you. The first thing to understand is that why do you want to attend x university? is not a trick question. Admissions officers are not looking to be flattered, or to be told how prestigious their institution is. They genuinely want to see what appeals to you about the school, and whether your interests and needs are aligned with what it has to offer. They also want to know whether youve visited, explored the website, read the course catalogue, etc. (Dont worry if you live too far to visit, or couldnt afford to ââ¬â as long as youve shown sufficient interest, it wont matter.) Just how seriously are you taking your application to their school? This is not just about judging applicants, by the way; its also about managing yield. As soon as colleges send out their acceptance letters, the balance of power shifts, and colleges must anxiously try to woo students away from their competitors. The percentage of admitted students, known as the yield rate, affects their rankings. So its in their interest to try to identify the students most likely to attend. A student who seems knowledgeable and enthusiastic about a school will therefore have an edge over comparable applicants with lukewarm or general statements. Your goal, in part, is to persuade the admissions committee that there is a real chance you will attend school x if admitted. But if youre not sure how to go about actually generating an essay, heres a roadmap. The key to writing a successful ââ¬Å"why this school essayâ⬠is to be as specific as possible. In general, you want to avoid clichà ©s such as ââ¬Å"rigorous coursesâ⬠or ââ¬Å"renowned facultyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"stunning campus.â⬠Pretty much every school has the first two, and when a school has third, theyââ¬â¢re used to applicants mentioning it ââ¬â a lot. Instead, focus on explaining how the school is a good match for you in particular, and vice-versa. A good way to check whether youââ¬â¢ve accomplished this is to plug in another schoolââ¬â¢s name and see whether the essay still fits. If it does, chances are youââ¬â¢ve written something way too generic. That isnââ¬â¢t to say you canââ¬â¢t come up with a general template that you adjust for each school, but the essays should not be interchangeable. So start by thinking about the subjects youre most likely to major in or, if youre not sure, think about which classes you enjoyed most in high school. Was there a topic or unit you particularly enjoyed (e.g. genetics in Biology, the Civil War in History)? Was there a paper or a project you were particularly proud of? Is there any field youve had a little bit of exposure to but couldnââ¬â¢t study at the high school level (e.g. archaeology, sociology)? Do any of your academic interests carry over into your extracurriculars (e.g. computer science and robotics club)? Go on the website of each school, find the relevant departments (the main page will usually contain a link to academics or departments and programs), and look through the undergraduate classes. Are there any courses that sticks out as interesting or unusual? Anything that makes you think, ââ¬Å"Wow, that sounds really interesting?â⬠Make a note of those classes, and write a few sentences explaining why theyââ¬â¢re so appealing to you. Are you interested in doing an internship, working in a lab, or studying abroad? See what the options are for those things. If youââ¬â¢re applying to school in a city, look into what sorts of opportunities there are for local businesses. Donââ¬â¢t just say you want to be in an exciting/dynamic/diverse urban environment that will expose you to different kinds of people. Talk about what companies might like to intern with, and how the school in question can help you gain practical experience in a field. Remember that at some schools, research can be difficult for undergraduates to get involved in; the best opportunities tend to be reserved for graduate students. If a school makes it easy for undergraduates, especially freshman, to conduct researchà from the start, thatââ¬â¢s something to talk about. What about the structure of the curriculum? Are there distribution requirements, or is there an open curriculum? Maybe you like the fact that a university cares about ensuring that its students gain competence in specific areas, or maybe youââ¬â¢re the sort of intensely focused, self-directed studier who would excel in a more open system. Next, look at housing and extracurricular activities. Is there anything unique or unusually appealing about the housing system? (One former student of mine wrote, for example, about a schoolââ¬â¢s system of pairing freshman roommates that he thought was ââ¬Å"brilliant.â⬠) Is there a residential college system? Special-interest housing? Look at clubs. What activities have you enjoyed the most in high school and want to continue participating in during college? Or maybe youââ¬â¢d be the most enthusiastic member of the schoolââ¬â¢s quidditch team. Finally, choose one memorable/interesting/quirky (but not too weird) thing that sticks out about the school for you. It can be very small ââ¬â maybe you were just impressed by how open and welcoming all the students you met on your visit were ââ¬â but it should be unique to that school. If focus on these things, you should have no problem churning outà 250-300 words pretty quickly.

The Haunting Truth Behind The Lake by Edgar Allan Poe
Poe first published ââ¬Å"The Lakeâ⬠in his 1827 collection Tamerlane and Other Poems, but it appeared again two years later in the collection Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems with a mysterious dedication added to the title: ââ¬Å"The Lake. Toââ¬â.â⬠The subject of Poes dedication remains unidentified to this day. Historians have suggestedà Poe wrote the poem about Lake Drummondââ¬âand that he might have visited Lake Drummond with his foster mother, but the poem was published after her death. The lake outside Norfolk, Virginia, also known as the Great Dismal Swamp, was said to have been haunted by two past lovers. The supposed ghosts were not thought of as malicious or evil, but tragicââ¬âthe boy had gone mad in the belief the girl had died. A Haunted Lake Lake Drummond was said to be haunted by the spirits of a young Native American couple who lost their lives on the lake. The young woman reportedly died on their wedding day, and the young man, driven mad by visions of her paddling on the lake, drowned in his attempts to reach her. According to one report, local legend says that if you go into the Great Dismal Swamp late at night youll see the image of a woman paddling a white canoe on a lake with a lamp. This woman became known locally as the Lady of the Lake, which has given inspiration to a slew of famous writers over the years. Robert Frost was said to have visited the central Lake Drummond in 1894 after suffering a heartbreak from splitting up with a longtime lover, and he later told a biographer that he had hoped to get lost in the wilderness of the swamp, never to return. Although the haunting stories may be fictional, the beautiful scenery and lush wildlife of this Virginia lake and surrounding swamp draw many visitors every year. Poes Use of Contrast One of the things that stands out in the poem is the way Poe contrasts the dark imagery and danger of the lake with a feeling of contentment and even pleasure in the thrill of his surroundings. He refers to the loneliness as lovely, and later describes his delight at waking to the terror on the lone lake. Poe draws on the legend of the lake to tap into its inherent dangers, but at the same time he revels in the beauty of the nature surrounding him. The poem closes with Poes exploration of the circle of life. Though he refers to death in a poisonous wave, he describes its location as Eden, an obvious symbol for the emergence of life. Full Text of The Lake. To In spring of youth, it was my lotTo haunt of the wide world a spotThe which I could not love the lessââ¬âSo lovely was the lonelinessOf a wild lake, with black rock bound,And the tall pines that towered around. But when the Night had thrown her pallUpon that spot, as upon all,And the mystic wind went byMurmuring in melodyââ¬âThenââ¬âah then I would awakeTo the terror of the lone lake.Yet that terror was not fright,But a tremulous delightââ¬âA feeling not the jewelled mineCould teach or bribe me to defineââ¬âNor Loveââ¬âalthough the Love were thine.Death was in that poisonous wave,And in its gulf a fitting graveFor him who thence could solace bringTo his lone imaginingââ¬âWhose solitary soul could makeAn Eden of that dim lake.
